There is the happiness we are normally accustomed to getting when we please our senses -- eating, sleeping, sex, etc. Then there is a slightly higher variety that comes from things like appreciating and creating art, reading a novel, etc. Then there is a higher pleasure that comes from service to others, philanthropy, etc. Its possible to put all of these varieties into one category because they all pertain to either the body or the mind and are therefore transient and flickering. So yeah, we can say that happiness in the material world is just a flickering high.

The reason we chase it with a passion is because we are meant to be happy and this is all thats available in the mundane sphere. We're like fish out of water here and each little bit of pleasure is like a bubble of air that keeps us going a little while longer. Its a pathetic existence actually.

But it doesn't have to be that way. We're all looking for unlimited, unending happiness, but it can't be had through these temporary bodies and minds. We have to realize our eternal, spiritual nature and engage ourselves in transcendental activities. This will not only give us immediate relief from the pains of material life, but also put us into contact with the ocean of bliss, the Supreme Lord.

the REAL happiness is NOT a transient high but an eternal reality. The problem is most people do not know what is real happiness and how to achieve it.

re: the next question, most people chase the so called happiness of their imagination like dogs chase cars because they do not know that they are not meant for such temporary happiness. this in turn is because they have forgotten their real identity which is NOT the body but the soul. With this pathetic condition of life they in fact live like dogs and try to enjoy anything they can but they will surely fail.

thanks.

No, I don't think happiness remains for a brief time. It's all to do with mindset and attitude. If one has a positive approach towards every life event then life at large is perpetually bright and there is no room for any negative emotion. All those who chase happiness are definitely not living but merely "existing".

Most often our behavior, attitudes and opinions are dependent on the expectations that we have from people or situations/ events. If that expectation is not met then a negative emotion sets in ruining the beauty of life.

"Never anticipate the course of events". This is what drives me to fulfill most of the challenging tasks that I encounter in life. At the end of the day it's calmness that I get.
