Limewire itself is not illegal, but it can be used in both legal ways and illegal ways. There is a lot of material that is either in the public domain, or the copyright owner allows re-distribution of the material. Using limewire to share these items is perfectly legal. Using limewire to share something that you've created is perfectly legal because you are the copyright holder of anything unique that you create.
There is a misconception in several of the answers here. Downloading copyrighted material is copyright infringement unless the copyright owner allows this type of use. Copyright infringement is illegal whether you sell the material or not.

Limewire is a legal program. It's design is to be a portal on the GNutella network that allows sharing files between two computers (P2P = peer to peer). What makes it controversial is the fact that people use Limewire to obtain illegal or copywritten materials.

It's legal I saw an edition on t.v about that and limewire is definitly legal no doubt about it I use it allot all my friends does believe me if it really was illegal I would not use it cause I'm not that stupid

Limewire is criminal, see you later as you're sharing non copyrighted textile. when you're sharing copyrighted song, pictures, video clips etc then it really is unlawful. there are countless documents on Limewire that are breaking copyright regulations, per chance decrease than 20 % of what's downloaded from Limewire isn't copyrighted. per chance an section band wanting to get there call out, or an section artist wanting you to ensure there artwork.

It;s legal as long as you do not sell
the stuff you download from the site
and a tip he gave me,when you want to download a song
but the person has gone to the trouble of doing the whole album
rip the whole album and then delete what you don;t want
people who take the time to load an album usually use the best
quality available.so you want to rip the album for quality
then delete the songs you do not like !
and you have a top quality single. to play with.....

It is legal. It is like saying buying and owning a gun is legal. Killing someone with it is not. What you may get prosecuted for is selling the music for money. It is really hard for them to figure out who the original source was for the music, but if you make a profit off of it, they can easily trace the money to you.
