Not just for abdominal surgery... but many others (eg-- Gyne operations) as well.. the normal Hb (hemoglobin) for women is 10-12 and men is 12-14. For children there are ranges depending on the age.
If Hb is low, it results in anemia. During surgery, especially abdominal surgery, there is alot of blood loss .. and the hemoglobin level goes down further -- resulting in even more severe levels of anemia and all the resulting complications. Hence, usually before operating it is recomended to raise the Hb levels -- by blood transfusion or iron supplements before operating.
