My parents bought our family their first computer when I was 15. My younger brothers didn't use it much outside of games, but I used it extensively for home work, research, games too, and the internet.

I think a family purchased computer is good for anyone at any age. But for going solo, I cannot say that even me being 15 was there an advantage to me having my own computer. Therefore to answer your question, I think the best suited age to get a laptop is when that individual can afford it on his/her own.

I would say college....why do u really need a laptop at a young age

When you old enough not to drop it.
Laptops are like regular computers only more expensive "in all ways" and more delicate. Also easier to steal. So think about it seriously before getting one.
