Like the events in the movie are they real?

"Contrary to popular belief, the film does not depict factual events, but instead was (like the films Psycho, Deranged, and The Silence of the Lambs) loosely inspired by Ed Gein, who, while he did wear human skin, acted alone and did not use a chainsaw. Those who believe the film was based on actual events will try to back up their statements by referring to similar events in Texas, none of which had anything to do with the film. Although the film's opening would have one believe that the events are factual, it is merely a scare tactic, called the false document technique, to frighten the audience. (The opening voice-over is performed by John Larroquette.). Libraries in Burkburnett, Texas and nearby Wichita Falls regularly receive requests for copies of newspaper articles related to the false actual events."

There was a family of cannibals up in New Hampshire back in 1973. They were all convicted of murder or lesser charges but most of them were released on appeal due to 4th amendment violations by NH state police. The grandfather had to stay in a hospital. It was never reported in the press because it is in some remote location but it's in the NH state appellate law books. I don't remember the citation but my professor discussed it with us when I was in law school. This case was very similar to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Not the way they show it in the movie, however it is based on true events. The mans name was/is Ed Gein, he was a 'Norman Bates' type with an overly controlling mother. Gein acted alone in his crimes there was no 'family of killers' But it makes a much better movie. Gein did wear the skin of his victims.

Yes and no. Actually the story is based on the murders committed by serial killer Ed Gein in Wisconsin back in the 40's. His killings also inspired "Psycho" and "The Silence Of The Lambs". Look it up.

They based the movie on several serial killers, combined the traits from each & made the flick. So, in a way...yes, the movie was based in facts, but no...it didn't happen exactly the way it was portrayed. One of the main subjects they pulled heavily from was Ed Gein. (I think that's the spelling on his name)

no..that's just hollywood sexing up a story, as usual..a bit of the plot of the film was based on the life of serial killer ed gein, who also inspired hannibal lector in silence of the lambs...geins crime were more mundane than chainsaws ( but still shocking) and took place in the 50's in the us.
