Depends on your major. Math and Science books are a lot (over $200 each), and social science readers are cheap. I always get used books when possible and this is what I spent:

My first semester (2 classes: Calc and Anthro): $650
Second (Computer and Psych): $51 (because I borrowed the psych book)
Third (Politics, Great Books, Spanish, and Theater): $450
Fourth (Political Philosophy, Great Books, Spanish, and English): $275 (I borrowed English books)
Fifth (Comp. Politics, Economics, Sociology, and Leadership): $221 (Leadership bought by the school)
Sixth (Int'l Politics, Con. Law, Medicine, and Statisitics): $215 (I borrowed my bf's stat book)
Seventh (two independent studies): $15 in photocopying charges. Heck Yeah!

I hope this helps you get an idea. It is never the same and nothing your can predict.

Books are very expensive! I just finished buying a couple actually! My advice is to buy what you can online, used off of a reputable website like amazon. I just saved over $100 buying my books for this semester off of amazon versus buying them USED in the campus bookstore. I wish I had known this information when I started college (i'm a grad student now). I literally just spent under 50$ for 2 books that would have cost me over $150.. !

I would say I spent , on avg about 150-350 for books from local/campus bookstores per semester.

Depends on the discipline. If you are majoring in a high-tech field (health sciences, engineering, computers), don't hold your breath on being able to get very many used books! (Although they haven't changed too many *bones* in the human body recently, the physiology seems to change minute by minute---and it's not the "standard reference books" that kill you in the checkout line.
For a really rough "ballpark estimate", entry-level college courses (survey type, such as intro to sociology, literature, history, business): you'll probably be lucky to get away with about $100 per class in the US. For tech-oriented classes?--I'd say probably better budget about $150-200/class.
Check out online booksellers for good prices, IF you can get the book requirements well ahead of time. Note well: at most college bookstores, used books go REALLY fast, so shop early. Good luck.

Depends on the classes... first and second year can get away with books for about $150-200 (in Oklahoma)
However, once you get up into higher level courses they get much more expensive for some reason.
If you are a science major, they are usually pretty hefty.
If you can "black market" them (get a book straight from a student, get an older edition) you'll end up paying a lot less.
And it's usually smart to wait until after the first lecture, because often the professor doen't require you to buy the book at all, if you are lucky!
Have fun in class!

Depends on your major-seriously. Biology and chem majors spend a hefty amount on books followed by business and econ majors. The books they have to purchase are HUGE, only come in hard cover and new editions usually appear every other year so they're not always able to purchase used if the most recent edition is required. Also can depend on where you're going to school. I would say plan on an average of $300 per semester if you are not one of the above mentioned majors, the majority of books you are purchasing are soft cover, and if you purchase some used. If you are one of the above majors, I hate to say it, but you're going to need to figure on about $100-$200 PER CLASS. :(

Check with your profs too. Sometimes they have extra copies and would be willing to lend them out to you. I borrowed a lot from my profs.
