Well the first Americans, the native Americans, were originally from Asia and arrived in the Americas via a land bridge some 16,000 years ago.

America was "discovered," a few times by different people. Leif Eriksson, Christopher Columbus, Saint Brendan, and many others. Only the prior two, Eriksson and Columbus have been historically proven.

The Americas as political entities started with colonies from many different "old world" countries. These were primarily colonies from Spain, Portugal, and Britain with smaller areas occupied by Russia, France, and practically every other European power at the time.

Basically the Europeans came in and directly and indirectly destroyed the various native American civilizations. They did this through enslavement, disease, and open war.

What is now the United States started off as British colonies. The colonists got fed up with taxation without representation, and a good many other things and eventually revolted. This war for independence, called the American Revolutionary War, was declared in 1776 and ended in 1783. The colonists won and The United States of America was born.

The next really big thing in American history is the American Civil War (1861-1865) the result of which was the end of slavery throughout the nation.

To answer your question of where the American (and by this I will assume you mean the US) people are primarily from. Here's the breakdown:

80.4% White American - includes people of European as well as Middle Eastern or North African descent (includes those who selected white in addition to another race and those who declared themselves as white-Hispanics) If you exclude white-Hispanics the percentage drops to 67.4%

12.8% Black or African American

4.2% Asian American

1.5% Two or more races

1% American Indian, which includes those of mixed race or more than one race in addition to Native Americans

0.2% Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander

I hope that cleared up some of your questions.

America's history: We had 2 centuries of progress. Then, in the last five years, nothing but problems, failures and disgrace.
