There was a comic strip about the adventures of a group of bluecoat soldiers at a fort named "Fort Ridiculous". There was a tribe of American Indians whom they encountered frequently.
There were even some books of compilations of the comic strips.
I'm 42, so I imagine that readers my age & older would remember this.

My favorite was a soldier asked an Indian if he was friend or foe. The Indian was giving him all sorts of reasons he was a foe - "dig the terra cotta skin-tone, witness the war-paint & the high cheekbones, see the deerskin clothing".
