On August 16, 1960, Captain Joe Kittinger jumped from a huge helium balloon at a height of 102,800 feet, almost 20 miles above the earth! Captain Kittinger fell for a full 4 minutes, 36 seconds.

Interesting bit of trivia, since the air was so thin and speed of sound changes with air temp and pressure, he is the only human in history to travel faster than the speed of sound without any sort of engine or mechanical device--just gravity and a long acceleration time.
And, it was over New Mexico. I remember when he got some sort of ticker tape parade, possibly on the 20th anniversary, over in Orlando that ended up ad Phineas Phogg's Pub at Church Street Station.
