I'm not talking about in the threatre. I'm talking about on the movie SET. The spotlights tend to dim and get brighter during the scenes. I'm not talking about when the movie goes completely dark in between scenes either. Just a little darker and then lighter again. I see it on DVD movies too, so I know it's not about the projection equipment.

No one understood the question so I did not pick a best answer. I was referring to lights on set, not in the theatre.

Not only the dimming lights, what about volume control. When the action scene comes on, the volume is so loud it makes my ears painful. I have complained only to be told that is the volume that the distributors have set. It's like when the adverts come on the TV, the volume doubles. What's the point? I vote with my feet and no longer go to the movies and stop watching CM. Both painful experience

They turn the lights down for the previews, to still allow people to see their way to their seats. The turn them off for the movie because they are a distraction unto themselves, and makes you see other people around you better (which is also a distraction).

In other words, it makes a better movie experience.

because it's a movie and everybody would want the lights dimmed with a scary movie.
