Why always blame teachers? I have students who receive rewards from their own parents for things that shouldn't receive rewards such as brushing their teeth, taking home an empty lunch (when all they do is throw it away once they're at school), money for each good grade and so on. I'm pretty sure that other teachers feel the same way.

Oh yes. The buzzword is "self-esteem," and teachers and coaches seem to think that frequent rewards just for showing up will instill it. Wrong! The only message that sends is that mediocrity is acceptable and one need not strive for excellence. Kids on the receiving end grow up thinking that no real effort is required in life.
Self-esteem comes from success. Set clear expectations in your classes and remember, students will rise to meet them wherever they are set. Real pride in self comes when a kid has truly done his best and achieved something to be proud of!

Hate it when teachers give candy as rewards. Should not be allowed.
I would rather see a privelage given at the end of the week for those that have completed all of there work and handed it in on time.
Those that dont get to do it at that time. Those that performed get to have an extra recess or something.
Works great.

Yes, but it's not just schools that contribute to the problem. Parents start the process before the youngsters even see a school.
When I taught 7th grade, we had a heated argument about whether every student should receive some award at our awards ceremony. We ended up deciding that not every student had EARNED an award, unless we could give awards for "Biggest Pain in the Butt," or "Student whose Parents we Most Wish Would Move Far Away."

Yes, but I suspect the whole system is directed toward teaching mediocrity. The question is why? Because it's easy? Because it's expected? Because...
It's sure not what teachers or students want. It's sure not what students need.

I do not give rewards to my children easily. They have to earn it. However, I take away benefits if they do not do what they are suppose to be doing.
Teachers here in Malaysia do not believe in giving rewards too often.

yes. rather than make them feel stupid and prepare them for the real world, parents will often pony up gifts for sub standard performances in hopes that kids will learn for themselves that winning isn't everything
