What are the benefits to living in Illinois vs Iowa and vice versa if we were to live in the border area or Davenport-Rock Island-Moline? I.e., taxes, cost of living, etc.

Cost of living should be very similar if these areas are considered part of the same metropolitan area. Tax wise, you pay lower income taxes in Illinois, 3.0% versus a range of .36 to 8.98 in Iowa. Sales tax is only slightly different in the two states, and if you are so compelled, living near a state border, shop in both states. Beyond this, look at apartments and homes in both states. You may find a neighborhood that wins you over personally, and negates any minor financial differences. Consider the usual factors:proximity to your job and activities you enjoy, school quality if you have kids or plan to have them, crime rates, and any other outstanding qualities of the community.

Hey, I do not know the benifits of either, but, I can tell you one thing. Go to The Davenport Stock Yard Cafe and you can get one of the best Steaks in the U.S.

IA. Housing is less expensive and people are nicer (in my opinion). IL isn't bad... I grew up in Chicago (lived there until very recently). Just soooo damn expensive!!
