My daughter is 7 months old & I have been breastfeeding since birth - She is now on solids & nurses about 3 to 5 times a day -
PLEASE READ word 4 word
Anyway 2 days ago I had a clogged milk duct that finally went away but now I have red bumps on my nipples and it is making nursing difficult - I cant find any info on what it could be - I'm not sure if the clogged duct caused the bumps -but if it did I don’t know why I have bumps on both nipples since only one breast was clogged - I'm concerned that the bumps could possibly be contagious since my daughter is exposed to them when she nurses-Also my daughter has developed a very bad diaper rash today-with the same type of bumps -or similar ones - -could this just be coincidence -or is it related ??
It doesn't seem like a typical diaper rash to me but I could just be over-reacting- I've been treating it -but if it gets worse I'll be taking her to the Dr- should I tell him about the bumps that I have?
What could this be What can I do?

Mom, this may be a simple form of yeast infection. I do not beleive it had anything to do with the ducts being clogged, but it could be from Thrush, which could be in the babies mouth. Your dr. would give you an RX for it to put around your nipple, and it would also benefit the baby. it is for the both of you.
Do not be scared, but get checked so you can get looking and feeling better.
Boy, I remember getting so scared when my babies were little. I don't envy you right now, but this all will pass.
You are a good, caring mom.

I had bumbs around my nipples also. I was told that it was a yeast infection (like thrush), even though my baby did not have thrush! They told me that because I was leaking so much milk my cheast area being wet caused the infection. It was painful to breastfeed. You should go to the doctor and have them look and make sure that is what it is so they can give you the correct medicine. Your daughter could also have a yeast infection, my son had this problem quite a bit because he was chubby, it would go away for a few weeks then reappear. Usually the doctor will just give you Nystatin for the babys rash. Good luck and dont worry too much you and the baby will be just fine. About the breastfeeding thing you should check with your doctor but I do not think it should be a problem because the baby would more than likely already have it if it was something contagious.

Just echoing the opinion of everyone who has said it sounds like a "yeast" infection (thrush, Candida, etc.). My daughter and granddaughter had this after being exposed to another baby with thrush. My daughter caught it in her nipples from her baby's mouth. And the baby had a bad looking bright red, bumpy diaper rash that did not respond to diaper rash ointment. Ten days of medicine (Difulcan) and they were both fine!

It is unlikely the clogged duct had anything to do with it.
It is a very good idea to wash your nipples after the baby has nursed, especially now that she is also having solid foods... you can actually catch infections in your nipples from bacteria in your baby's mouth!

Addendum: Thrush and other Candida (yeast) infections are NOT caused by bacteria (antibiotics will even make it worse!), so one should not conclude that this type of infection occurs from being "dirty"... Candida likes to grow in warm, moist areas. It exists in the body already, but when conditions are right, an overgrowth causes the infection. Many women get vaginal yeast infections after taking antibiotics!

It could totally be thrush, and there is no reason to stop breastfeeding. A baby does not have to show symptoms in her mouth for thrush to be present though that is common.

Definately get checked out by a Dr but don't be scared to breastfeed. There is absolutely nothing wrong with breastfeeding a baby when mom or baby or both are showing signs of thrush.

My son had thrush when he was about 10 months old. Though I showed no signs of it myself, the Dr recomended that we both take probotics to clear it up. After one week it was totally gone.

Definately see your Dr.

Don't know if you have any allergies or not, but this might be part of the problem. Even if you were't allergic to anything before giving birth, things can change drastically after that event because your whole metabolism gets rearranged.
If you have an allergic reaction, you could pass it on to your daughter through your milk.
When you go to the doctor, make sure you DO tell him about your bumps as well. There are so many things it could be, and there is no point in guessing at what it might be. Go to the doctor and find out for sure what is affecting both you and your baby.
Good luck!

What you are describing sounds like thrush! Very treatable, very common--Thrush is a fungus (the same one that causes vaginal yeast infection) that can cause symptoms for the mother and the baby.
You both will need to be treated at the same time, call your doctor--there are medications that will clear this up!
Congrats on your fabulous breastfeeding!
Take care-- get well soon!

seek medical help, your daughter can be reacting to your allergies. It can be thrush or even yeast infection, yes you can get them on your breast too, especially on your nipples. I have came across the same thing, but where it came from was dirty hands or a bacteria in your daughters diapers, when you clean her, make sure that your hands are too clean before and after, when you feed her clean your breasts before and after. She can end up with this stuff in her mouth as well, but you still will need medical help, because it can cause problems later in life! But I can be wrong...just get medical help.

Check for white patches in her mouth it sounds like she might have thrush which is irritating your nipples. It also sounds like a yeast rash on her bum. You can get a script from your doc, but you can also use over the counter antifungal like monistat. If she does have white patches in her mouth you will have to get a prescrption of nystatin. good luck.

Probably a Monilia infection. There are ointments available for this. Keep her dry and use a powder after changing her. Use the ointment on you, too. Look in over the counter drugs or ask the pharmacist.
