I think natural make up is OK for middle school aged girls (age 12 or so). When they first start wearing make up, tell them if its done correctly it will look like they're not wearing any at all, just their features will stand out.
If you dont know how, ask a girlfriend or relative to come over and have a "make up party" with your girls before they are allowed to wear it to school. Ask them for help teaching the girls the right way to apply make up. You can also have a few makeover nights with your girls, letting them practice on themselves and on you (if youre brave) and also let them know what looks are not appropriate for them to wear out of the house. You can research on line before you do this, Im sure there are websites that suggest ways to apply make up.
here are some basics to teach them:
Face: BLEND. No make up lines or caked on powder, it should look natural. Start with natural/neutral shades for eyeshadow, cheeks, and lips. (Lip gloss is still a favorite of mine) Make up should highlight your best features. Beginners should avoid liquid eyeliner alltogether - its not easy to use and can look way too dark & heavy for young girls.

About the age where the start looking like girls, and not like kids.
There's nothing wrong with teaching a girl about beauty, because, like it or not, that's reality. Being pretty is the domain of females. Being pretty is part of being a woman. That being said, when they are starting to look like women, start letting them do a little.
The trick is to not teach them dependancy, and to not teach them to seek attention. The basic lesson you're trying to instill is that you should always make yourself presentable. For guys, that means combed hair, brushed teeth, and fclothes that fit. For girls, it also means a bit of makeup.
I'd say 7th grade sounds about right. There's some kids wearing it a little earlier nowadays, and you've got deal with that, but I wouldn't focus too much on what other kids were doing. That's a lesson in itself.
Just a little at about 13 or 14. That's fine.

13 or 14 years old. There is no reason for a little girl to wear makeup. Be a kid and enjoy childhood.

Thank GOD I had all boy's so I have no idea... I have a hard enough time keeping my oldest out of Hollister so... I think a girl, especially if she was anything like me, would have killed me!
Let that crap be someone Else's problem!
I didn't start wearing make-up properly anyway until I was 17.

naturally you might hafta learn to apply it yourself then you would be able to teach your daughter how to diy. but im not really pleased with a kid as young as 12 year old wearing eye shadow, blushes and mascara going out with their gangs (lipgloss or lipbalm is ok imo). probably around 15 years when their social circle is getting bigger and the need arise to appear more presentable.

well, my boyfriends sister started wearing makeup at age 13, just teach them how you do it, and they'll end up putting twists of their own onto it. I taught her, and i just showed her exactly like I did it. Make sure to exaggerate not to use too much.

the really popular girls start in 7th grade. they wear really dark shades of eyeshadow so people think they are cooler and more ghetto and stuff. other girls start 7th-9th grade.
