I'm told my call cost the other party their credit. Can this be right?

I can't see that this is correct. Get the other person to ring Orange Customer Services (which is free for them) and ask what happened. Most likely they did something like order a ringtone or send an MMS message and forgot about it, then they thought it was you calling that cost their credit.

They must be pretty dumb though to think that you pay to receive a call in the UK from another UK network.

Alternatively you could ring Tesco customers Services and ask them - they will know for sure.

If you look at this:

http://www.tescomobile.com/tariff.aspx
www.orange.co.uk

You'll see that there is no cost indicated in other people receiving calls from a Tesco network.

If, for some reason you ARE getting charged - then there is a scam involved and you need to speak to OFTEL and Orange to get it sorted.
