What you are talking about is fraud--a VERY illegal activity.

There are plenty ways of damaging it enough, but I'm guessing you want it to look like it could have broke by itself. In that case I'd suggest going the health and safety route instead of the heavy damage route.

Claim that the belt seized up and you had some kind of accident and you don't think it's safe, that your friend who's a lawyer suggested you sue but you're an easy-going guy and you'll let it go and just get a refund, say it like it'd never even occur to you they wouldn't give you one - they'll refund you straight away. The prospect of litigation is way more compelling than the prospect of losing a sale. The other beauty of that approach is that in the unlikely event it doesn't work, your treadmill still works fine.

Why can't you just return it as unwanted anyway? And don't you have any moral problem with trashing a perfectly good treadmill the cost of which a business then has to eat?

This will take some delicate balancing,
Take a motorcycle and balance the rear wheel on the rubber band, then start the bike and the treadmill and run the bike until you see smoke coming from inside the treadmill indicating that the motor's windings has burnt. If the bike seizes first then you're screwed....

I would keep it if I were you... an excellent baby walker machine.
And you won't be getting any action for a while so a bit of exercise will do you good too....

get you and a mate to lift and shake it, anything fragile inside should shake loose without obvious signs of tampering
