I am 14 weeks pregnant and I was wondering how do you think my dogs will react to me having my baby. Can you tell me your story. I also have two cats.

Keep in mind that dogs are "pack" animals and you are probably viewed as the "Alpha" female. After the baby comes, slowly introduce your dog to the baby and try to include the dog in activities with the baby. This way the dog can learn his "place" in the group.

What kind of dogs do you have? Some breeds tend to be more protective than others. But it also depends on how the dog was raised. We have a pit bull mix who LOVES kids. But she doesn't like certain adults. We're anxious about how she'll act toward a baby. We don't want her to get over protective and see the baby as hers, and we don't want her to see the baby as a threat either. Unfortunately if either of those happen, we'll have to find her a new home.

Cats on the other hand, could usually care less. Unless they are your "babies" now. Then they might get a bit jealous and not understand why you pay more attention to something that screams, than you do to them. The key to either is to make sure you still pay attention to your pets after the baby is born. It's almost like including your other children with a new baby so they don't get too jealous and feel left out, unloved, forgotten, etc etc. Good luck!!

Most of the time they'll just sniff the child and ignore it (I don't know if your child is a boy or girl). Just to protect the child after it is born, bring home a blanket that has the baby's scent on it. Let the animals get used to the idea of someone else moving in. Spend around the same amount of time paying attention to them, or they'll feel that you don't love them anymore. If you're that worried that they'll hurt the child, install toddler doors in the child's room. But really don't worry.

We have 3 english bulldogs and one cat. When we brought our daughter home, they smelled her and that was it. As she got older, they were great with her. I think you need to make sure that you give them the same attention, or close to it, you did before the baby. All breeds are different, though. Good Luck!!!

They will *nose* around, may be a little jealous at first, but most animals cans sense babies, and will become over protective! That's my experience with them!
