I live in a state that does not have a sales tax.

If I sell an item on Ebay, does the buyer pay sales tax based on where the item is shipped?

If I buy an item on Ebay, do I pay sales tax?

The Ebay help options are very confusing on the subject of sales tax.

Here's how it technically works. If you are selling it within your state, then you may or may not have to pay sales tax (this is up to the seller). If you are a buyer out of state, you do not have to pay sales tax. If you are selling to someone out of state, you do not charge sales tax.

The only time sales tax should be charged or paid for is when the business is being conducted within your own state but again, it really is up to the seller as to whether or not to charge it.

This is how many online stores work, if they have locations in your state, you pay your states sales tax. If the store is out of state or the warehouse locations are out of state, they do not charge you sales tax.

For example, if I purchase something from Newegg and the closest warehouse is in New Jersey and I live in Maryland, I do not pay any sales tax. If the warehouse or retail location was in Maryland then I would pay sales tax regardless of where it was shipped from.

If you buy something from someone who is shipping from the same state (ie: You live in FL and so does the seller) you pay FL sales tax... so if your state doesnt have sales tax you as a buyer dont pay anything.
You dont pay tax for any other reason. Only when you are acting as the buyer. And if no sales tax in your state then it doesnt matter where you buy anything from, you wont have to pay any tax.

You only have to charge sales tax if the buyer lives in a state that charges sales tax on items bought online. Only a few states do this. I'm not sure which ones do it, though.
