I've done this once before, and it freed up about 10% of space. I forgot how to do it safely though.

To delete older restore points, but leave the system restore turned on: Right Click the Drive in question/Properties/Disk Cleanup/More Options/System Restore/Cleanup.

Go into the control panel
Click on the System icon
Select the System restore tab
Click on Settings button
Reduce the system space setting
This will force Windows to delete the older restore points so it can keep the newer ones, and also prevent it from filling that space back up in the future so you won't have to do this again 3 months from now.

Personally I turn system restore off when I do a fresh install of windows xp pro for 2 reason, 1 is to free up hard drive space, 2 to prevent certain viruses from copying themselves to the restore point should they make it past my antivirus software. To turn it off simply go to my computer and right click it, then select properties, system restore. You'll have to select each drive you want system restore turned off on. I would not recommend this for someone that isn't comfortable with reloading operating systems however, I do them all the time.

Start - all programs - accessories - system tools - disk cleanup...disk cleanup will calculate how much space can be saved by running this task...This may take SEVERAL minutes..then choose more options on the bottom should be system restore choose clean up and that will remove all but your most recent restore points.
