I don't think its that it is more widespread these days. Its more likely that it can now be discussed. The news feels it can report on it. Its like everything else.
If you went to a psychologist 40 years ago, you hid it because nobody EVER discussed this kind of thing then. Your neighbors could have ALL been going to therapy and you would have never known it.

1. It existed years ago, people just didn't talk about it.
2. The internet has made it easier then ever to bring such things into the home.
3. Its all generated by the gradual breakdown of the morals of our society.

most child porn is a government agency looking for offenders. Lots of government agency's busting each other and looking like idiots. Child porn is really very rare. There aren't that many people that dig it. It is just over publicized
