How to umpire a single game? If you're umping some sort of pickup game or something and you're working alone you have to do it from behind the plate to call balls and strikes. If it is a baseball game or a fastpitch softball game you should wear protective equipment. Get yourself an indicator or you will go nuts keeping track of balls and strikes. It is hard calling balls and strikes. The most important thing is to call the pitches as consistently as you can. If the talent level of pitching is low by all means call a generous strike zone or you will have a very long game. Just remember that what you call a strike in the first inning should be called the same way in the late innings. Verbalize a strike call, third called strikes are the loudest of all. Ball calls don't need to be loud at all. Have an attitide that when it is a strike it will be easily known. Don't make a loud call on a swing on miss though, the batter will feel bad enough without you pointing it out to the whole world that he swumg and missed.

When the ball gets hit try to get out from behind the plate to make the calls. You will need to leave from the catchers left or you will keep bumping into the catcher if he/she is going to back up first base. Think angles, you will not be able to get all the way out to the bases, just try to get in a position to get a decent look. Also for a play at first use your eyesight and hearing. Watch that the first baseman has foot on bag then listen for the two distinctive sounds of the throw from the infielder hitting the mitt and the thump of the runners foot hitting the bag. If you can focus on these sounds the closest possible play will be obvious. On a tag play it is ok to go with the throw beating the runner means the runner is out. Remember when in doubt call an out. If you will have a play at third and no play at the plate try to go up the line in foul territory then duck into fair territory if you will have a call. Don't make a big loud call on every call or you will have nothing to go to on a close call. A close out should be called louder than a close safe call. Don't rush your calls, better to be a beat slow than to reverse yourself should a ball come loose on a tag or something.

Do you mean how to become an umpire? A baseball umpire or a softball umpire? At the beginning levels it is easy to get started because the pay is low and the level of abuse can still be pretty high. Ask at a local school to be referred to a local umpiring group. They'll be glad to have you. You also will see advertisements for local umpiring clinics that will get you certification to start doing some low level games.

good luck.
