That's what you use to keep the discman from accidently opening while playing a cd. Like if you use your disk man while walking or running...it'd be bad if the cd just popped out. You know?

The hold button (or function) generally has two functions:

1. Prevent the lid from opening (you don't want your favorite CD to fall of into the rough ground below y'know)

2. Prevents the other buttons from being accidentally pressed ( prevents from stopping the playback while you were looking for another button, ort while running or doing something else, unless of course you fall on top of it, there's no button saving you from that one)

its to prevent any other button being pressed or rather if any other button is pressed it over rides its scheduled operation.

means it prevents all other functions of the discman from taking place if their buttons are pressed

its not to keep it from opening, it makes it so that if any buttons get pushed, nothing happens, it just continues playing. same thing on an ipod.
