what do you do when your musician friend shows you his music and its really really bad?

You gotta be gentle to the budding artist, but you don't want him to go out and embarass himself, either.

If its a style you know something about, you can give him tips, "Gee, do you really think the camels screeching in the background adds to the overall musical theme ?"

If you can't give a tip because it's a style you wouldn't normally listen to, you can beg off with "You know, Chinese Opera really isn't my thing, so I can't judge.... "

Whatever you do, don't tell him "Dude, that sucks." Even the Beatles had a learning curve.

You just say, "man that is cool ! Keep it up!"....don't discourage him. I've had the same experience and I hated the stuff he came up with; but hey, who knows? Don't be known as the one who burst his bubble. It ain't worth the friendship.

i know someone like this...and usually i just tell her 'that it isn't bad, just needs a little tweaking' but when she makes me listen to tapes of her singing--i have to tell her the truth...that it is awful!
