I'd say bypass tampons all together, tampons themselves are very bad for vaginal health [TSS, yeast infections, bacterial infections, vaginal splitting, chemical exposure, fibre loss, prevention of natural vaginal cleaning, increase in menstrual cramping, etc.], particularly commercial tampons (e.g. Tampax).
On top of this there are also environmental concerns [12,000 tampons per woman in a lifetime, use of non-organic cotton, only using 30% of trees for materials used, chemicals and bleach causing pollution, energy use in bleaching, promoted as flushable when they are not, etc.].
There are also the factors of cost and convenience and the many historical, cultural, social, moral, and political issues behind tampons – yes, it really is that complicated.

The best internal menstrual option would be menstrual cups; there are various different forms but all share some common advantages – safe with no health risks associated at all, environmentally friendly, cheap, and convenient.
Menstrual cups only need to be emptied every 12 hours, they do not leak, there is no need to carry spares, they can be worn at night, they can be worn prior to menstruation, they can be worn during sports and swimming, nothing showing externally, many women find they reduce menstrual cramps and even length of menstruation.
Diaphragms and diaphragm shaped cups also have the advantage of allowing for vaginal penetration, such as sex or masturbation, without mess, if that is a concern for you.

There are different forms of menstrual cups and different brands;

- Rubber bell-shaped reusable menstrual cups – e.g. Keeper.

- Silicone bell-shaped reusable menstrual cups – e.g. Divacup, Mooncup, Lunette.

- Softcup [soft plastic diaphragm shaped disposable menstrual cups] – e.g. Instead.
http://www.softcup.com

- Diaphragms used as reusable menstrual cups.

- Homemade menstrual cups.

These are largely bought online however because of the huge rise in popularity they are becoming more mainstream, Instead are available at many US stores and reusable menstrual cups are becoming more widely available as well, turning up in the likes of Boots as well as already common within health stores.

If you are going to use tampons then the safer the better, commercial tampons carry added risk over other forms of tampons because the materials they use are linked strongly with toxic shock syndrome (TSS), which although rare is still a risk and far understated by official statistics because of the way in which they quantify TSS cases. These super absorbent materials along with the chemicals and bleach used unnecessarily (used to make products whites, playing to menstrual taboos to insure women feel negative towards menstruation, keeping tampon customer base) increase risk of not only TSS but also infections by giving bacteria a pores environment to breed, more absorbency means higher risk of vaginal splitting for bacteria to invade and chemicals alter vaginal PH that in turn disrupts vaginal bacteria balance. As tampon manufacturers are not legally obliged to tell us what chemicals are used this also means potential risk of mucus membrane absorbing harmful chemicals easily from the tampon – prior to 1997 tampon manufacturers used chlorine gas bleaching resulting in dioxin as a by-product, this is the main reason why people do not trust tampon manufacturers use of chemicals in their products.

Alternatives would be organic tampons, sponge tampons or homemade tampons.

Organic tampons are just like commercial tampons however they are made from 100% organic cotton and do not contain chemicals or bleach so there is lower risk of TSS and infections. Natracare are the only organic tampon company around at the moment after Organic Essentials stopped producing menstrual products, but Natracare can be found in many stores as they are becoming more and more popular and do a lot within the community – http://www.natracare.com

Sponge tampons have the same benefits of organic tampons, however they are made from sponge and therefore reusable for several cycles so a lot cheaper as well as more environmentally friendly. Jade and Pearl are the best known sellers, but Lunapads also sell sponge tampons as well as a number of other places –

Homemade tampons are of course made at home, normally made by tearing up strips of cotton blankets or fabric, normally around an inch wide and however thick you need for your flow. Material is then rolled up in a 'swiss roll' shape and inserted into the vagina, most women dispose of these after one use but they are reusable, depending on your comfort level.

I like Kotex Security. They work really well and don't leak. You can keep them in from 4-6 hours, depending on your flow. I tried the Tampax pearls but they always leaked. But whichever ones you choose. It's a good idea to wear a pantyliner, as a back-up. Cause you never know...

Pearl is by far the best for everything. It's easy to use, comfortable, and I have never had one leak. As far as exercising, I'm a long distance runner, and they are the only tampons I use. So I think they're the best for what youre looking for.

Kotex Security is the easiest to use; plastic applicator, easy to insert, very absorbant. Tampax is also a good pick. Swing by and see your school nurse, she may have some sample packs for you to take home and try out.

I started out with OB they are very small, BUT powerful
BUT you need to change those things and all tampons regularly like 2-4 hours do not leave them in longer no matter how much they hold...To help prevent TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME

TRY to get NATURAL 100% COTTON

HOWEVER SOME sites will SEND free samples, best to see what fits and feels better FOR YOU, we are all different.
