...because it's at the root of overuse of resources (gas, oil, water, real estate, etc., etc).

I imagine you can think up as many examples of this as I can.

If few people = lower demand, why is it that so many people seem to think the answer to gas shortages, destruction of woodland, critical water shortages, horrendous traffic, overpriced housing, etc., is to have a baby?

I am completely serious, and I'd gladly read any thoughtful responses.

Your question is essentially a Malthusian one.

Malthus (1766-1834) predicted that population would overrun food supplies by the middle of the 19th century. Unchecked population growth occurs at a geometric rate; food production occurs at the slower arithemetic rate. What Malthus didn't factor was that technology and resource development advances over time. It doesn't stay the same. And that changes the rate of depletion of any resource (food, oil, lumber, etc.).

I would submit that the greatest crisis we face is the lack of will and foresight to advance socially, technogically, and scientifically in order to not only preserve, but heighten the standard of living for all humanity.

the population in the whole has dropped throughout europe over the last 20 years,
their is now to many old folk and not enough youngsters working ,paying taxes ect to pay the pensions of the older generations.
however the third world countries continue to over produce and they are only adding to the food and water problems they all ready have,,
the good old catholic church have a lot to answer for as they refuse to let these poor people use contraception..
in china you have a rule of 1 child per couple to try and slow down there population

i dont think there is an easy answer my friend ,but i do know we better find an alternative source for energy and fuel because if you think the fighting going on at the moment over oil ect,is bad ,,just wait to you see it if europe or the yanks suddenly run out,,
grab your hard hat my friend dig a hole and hide for a few years

cheers

Over population is not the problem....Greed is. There are plenty of resources to go around but 2% of the people insist on using up 90% of the available goods and foods. GREED!

According to a popular country/western song Texas is as close as you can get to Heaven so we should all move there and be happy....

If you moved every person in the whole world to Texas, then each person would have a square of property that would be 388 feet on each side. or 150, 697 square feet per person. More than enough to raise food and make goods and services.

But of course the current owners of Texas are way too greedy to allow that to happen so the misery continues.

If you take the world as a whole, it is the developed countries with slow-growing and ageing population which account for the major part of over use of resources. Over population is a feature of many developing countries which have small and falling share in goods and services produced in the world. Consumerism in the developed countries is a far more serious problem than over population in the world. Over population keeps the developing countries poor and constraints their consumption. It is indeed true that the governments in developing countries are doing too little to control population growth and the damage being done to their environment.
