I read that it was based on a Korean film, "Siworae". It was produced in 2000.

P.S. Il Mare was the ITALIAN title of the orignal film, and the restaurant's name in the "The Lake House"

David Auburn wrote the screenplay for "The Lake House"

It's an adaption of the Asian film
"Il Shiweolae" (year 2000; also known as "Il Mare", "A Love That Transcends Time", "Siworae"), writer of the screenplay: Jina Yeoh.

But I guess that still doesn't give you the name of the original story, if there is one...

the "lake house" based on the original korean movie with the title "il mare", the hollywood version is much less romantic, get the original with subtitles so you can compare...
