Planting Pine Cones

2016-12-29 12:06:12 · answer #2 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

Yes the seed is in the cone, but you have to make sure the seed is there as animals and birds eat them and leave the cone bare.
That is how pine trees are grown in nature. The cones fall to the ground and the seeds not eaten are given a good chance to grow into a tree. It depends if the seeds are covered by soil or undergrow grow, and how much moisture and sun they get.
Some seeds are eaten by animals and birds and pass though them ending up on the ground and on their way to becomming trees.
Many seeds are buried by animals for later use and become seedlins. But where too many trees grow there is not enough sunlight and they are all stunted or grow tall and slim wiyh no trunk or actual tree size suitable for timber or animal use. These are weakened and die easy by fire, animals, pest, and disease.

Pine trees grow from the seeds that are inside the unopened pine cone. The pine cone itself will not grow a tree. When the seeds and cone are mature, the cone opens, and the seeds fall to the ground.

You can find a cone still on the tree that has started to open, and take it off. Put it somewhere where it can dry, and it will open. You will see the seeds.

You can plant it, but nothing will grow. The pinecones you pick up off the ground have no seeds in them.

If you look up into a pine tree, you'll see a bunch of "closed" pinecones, meaning that they aren't all spread out and if you ran your finger along it, it'd go along ridges, but not go "inside" the different shingle-looking parts. This is because the seeds are still maturing inside that pinecone. They do open up once while the seeds are still immature, so that the tree pollen can get inside and fertilize them, but then they close up until the seeds are ready to be released.

Then the pinecone opens one more time, the seeds come out, and the pinecone stays for awhile before falling to the ground, where its only remaining use is to be picked up and given to a kindergarten class to paint with glue and glitter.

If you want to see pictures and a decent explanation, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinecone

Great question.

A pine cone has many seeds. Inside each "petal" is a seed. Let it dry for awhile and the seed will easily come out. Yes, you can plant it, just like any other plant.

Nope. U plant the tree than the cone grows.

More than one. Each "leaf" of a cone holds a seed, unless it has popped open, in which case, it has no seeds left.

you could, i suppose, but if the seeds already fell out nothing would grow. all those appendages sticking out holds seeds. more than likely a critter beat you to the punch. good luck
