Get rid of you fruit, or put it in the fridge.

Most important is to eliminate the source... put the fruit in the fridge. An interesting side note... once, I was saving used coffee grounds from the espresso machine for my plants. I was using one of those cannisters with the spring-loaded lid and it was malfunctioning, so I just left it open. I got fruit flies REALLY bad in the kitchen and had no fruit! They were in the coffee grounds! Isn't that the oddest thing? Anyway, the only fruit I leave out for any length of time is bananas.

Fruit flies come in on the fruit so the secret to eliminating the flies is to eliminate the source. Remove the fruit, then when you buy new fruit you must cover the fruit so the flies can't get out of the container.
