Don't remove the tailgate. The tailgate swirls the air being dumped over the cab and creats a kind of buffer that the air above the cab slips over. Not real sure about a cover,as youd still be dealing with the air shooting back behind the cab.By covering up the bed with a cap, youd eliminate the air dumping into the bed,but then you'd have to wonder if you'd save gas due to the extra weight of the cab.

When I had a truck, I just put the tailgate down. My dad has a cover and that works pretty good too. I have never tried a cap, but that's only because I never got around to looking for one.

A rain drop is the aerodynamically most efficient shape. The closer the shape of a vehicle approaches that shape, the more efficient it is. Cap is best, cover next, but since they both tend to end rather than curve down, they are probably not much different from each other.

According to the makers of the most popular trucks you should keep the tail-gate on the truck and keep it closed. Because the vehicles have been designed for their best fuel economy with the drag that is created with it closed.
