I think it all depends on what kind of friend you are talking about, wither it is someone that you were in a serious relationship with, or a best friend.
Eiter way it also depends on why the two of you went your seperate ways....
It takes a big person to pick up the phone and take the first step or only a car ride over to their house. No matter whos fault it was it takes a big person to say I am sorry.
The next step is to talk. If the other person isn't interrested in being friends any more than you must just let it go and move on.
If they are really good friends then it will work out and you will have gained your friend back.
either way good luck - and don't worry about the points just call your friend and take care of that relationships, remember good friends are hard to find.

Easy... call them and apologize for everything that happened, even if it was simply time that kept you apart. There's always room for forgiveness (unless you broke up their marriage...then you're screwed!) Talk about all the good times you had, and how you miss that.
