Every night I get between eight or nine hours of sleep. That is, I'm in bed with my eyes closed and lights off. I don't sleep very well. I tend to wake up a few times every night. Once in a while I do sleep straight through the night. However, my dilemma is, no matter how much sleep I do get, I always wake up feeling like I haven't slept at all. I go through each day feeling unrested and exhausted. I'm on medications for epilepsy, and both have sleepiness and fatigue as side effects, but if I've been on both medications for years, wouldn't the side effects have worn off by now? I was anemic, due to another medication I was on, but I stopped taking it and am not anemic any more. My job requires me to be very active during the day, so I don't spend the day being lazy. I know it isn't normal to be this tired every minute of every day. Does anyone have any advice?

I'm not sure if any of the sleep aids prescriptions like ambien or lunesta would interfere with your medications, but ask your doctor. Also, I know some people that feel like 8 hours is too much sleep for them. Sometimes when you sleep too long, you'll feel tired all day. Try going to bed later or waking up earier. Try getting between 5-7 hours of sleep instead. See if that helps.

The side effects might not wear off, they might continue for however long you're on the medication.

Talk to your doctor.

Listen to upbeat music when you wake up in the morning. Take a cold shower. Find an audio clip on the Internet of Reveille... it wakes up the armed forces, doesn't it?
Take a warm shower or bath before bed. Relax. Stay off the computer for a few hours before bed.
