It has become apparent in America that regardless of the kind of how safe the neighborhood actually is, monorities drive down property value. How do you see the situation?

Hmmm...tuff call. The ideal would be to live in a mixed neighborhood where everyone had respect for everyone else. From what I see around me, I guess that's out.... Honestly, I live in the deep south, and there is alot of anger still between the races here, unfortunately. I don't understand it at all, but I have seen for myself that it goes both ways. A black friend of mine has actually warned me that there are places where I should not go, since a white woman alone in those places would not be safe. That is very sad. There are places, too, where she would not be safe. That is also very sad. Our friendship has drawn anger from both of our families and friends. That is really very sad... There is some reason, here, at least, why black neighborhoods become slum areas. I was a major voice, along with some other friends, a few years back, to get the city to put Christmas decorations up in the black neighborhood. Believe me, there was some stiff opposition to this idea, but we kept lobbying for it, and we did wind up getting our way. The city was about to buy more Christmas decorations to replace the old ones, which had worn out. Anyway, they put the new decorations up...but they didn't last out the season. Vandals either tore them apart, or stole them completely. Since then, I have kept my big yankee foot out of my southern belle mouth...... EDIT: To clarify, I grew up in upstate New York, not that my family was not racist...it just wasn't as rampant as here... Also, I don't live in an actual "city" but in a very small town. The lines here are very clearly drawn, but they are, praise God, beginning to blur, just a bit. I do have hope...

I went through this situation this spring when I moved I was given a choice of moving to the slums and paying more rent than where I am living now and I live in a GREAT area! I would take the mostly white neighborhood nothing against blacks because no matter where you go there are good ones and there are bad ones! It is the same with white people there are good ones and there are bad ones!

As with any other criteria, it really depends on the neighborhood. I've definitely seen some black neighborhoods that I'd rather live in than a lot of white neighborhoods. And if I'm renting, the property value doesn't really matter to me--that's between the landlord and his realtor (and his property tax collector).

This is not a 'situation' as you call it. Its a case of ignorance, racism, and stereotypes. That is how I see it. This isn't discussed as a 'situation' in rural farming areas where there are a predominance of whites and Mexicans. Only when it comes to blacks does the issue of property values going down comes up. If this is a serious question and you are truly confused, then check out the sites below. This is a question that can not be answered in one paragraph. If you are just trying to start trouble, then check the sites anyway. Maybe you will learn something.

i see this all the time. its not just blacks, its all minorities. even a small percentage of whts live in poverty stricken neighborhoods. naturally, the rent for an apartment will be a lot less in a poor neighborhood and be more in a middle-class wht neighborhood. it is because of the crime rates, also. i can understand poverty in our country because of the terrible economy but i will never understand why people have to turn to violence and murder just because they are poor. i came from a poor family and i was always able to act civil. maybe these people should try that!! but no, there is not a chance in the world i would pay the same amount of rent in a bad neighborhood as i would in a good neighbor hood. i would never subject my kids to that crap!!

this is completley true. it doesnt matter how good the neighberhood if it is a mostly black neighberhood, they associate it with drugs and violence. i think what they relle should pay attention to is how good the wuality of the houses are. obviously, someone who lives in a nice house or apartment is not gonna be doing drugs and be a violent person. then, how will they get the money to pay for the rent and upkeeping of their house? as long as u look at the attitude of the ppl of a whole surrounding ur house is, ull be fine.

I see the situation as unfortunate but true. We learn based upon that which we see, no? You'll get a lot of rhetoric in response to your question from some well trained individuals. Anyone with a brain will answer your question correctly.

That is a bigoted question. The rent depends on the quality of the neighborhood, not the color.

If they were equal in quality, then yes. I didn't know that minorities drove down the value of property. I will share this info with my friends so we can have a discussion about it.

Well yeah, but where is the neighboorhood, in the same area? Are the crimes more prevelent? If they are equal, which they probably arn't, then yes, but usually the answer is no. So I don't see how that is ever a choice anyway.
