Does anyone have any suggestions or tips on how to improve the butterfly stroke for competitive swim? I'm a high school swimmer who will most likely be swimming the 100 Fly in meets, and I'm looking for encouragement and ideas on how to look and feel more confident in my fly.

I swam 100 fly all four years in high school & 2 years in college. I absolutely HATED that race & felt like I could hardly get through the last 25 of it. There were a few times that didn't happen... Going into those races, I felt strong, confident & RELAXED. I got my best times & felt great while swimming.

So... My advice would be to be positive & relax. There is so much about swimming that is mental. You have to really believe in yourself. If you are swimming relaxed, it is so much easier to swim butterfly.

GOOD LUCK & HAVE FUN!!! : )

Check with your coach on this one. Fly is one of the most complicated strokes in the swimmer's lexicon. Main points are to work on your leg propulsion -- keep your legs right together and don't let them drift apart, use alternate stroke breathing if you can, and make sure your fingertips clear the water. If there is any drag, it really slows you down.
Do a good warmup before the meet, and a good stretching session after your race.
And don't forget, fly is a two-hand touch! Can't tell you how many swimmers who knew better, have been DQ'd for a one hand or staggered hand touch.
Good luck!

Kick once when ur hands enter the water and once when ur hands are by ur stomach area. This will help ur body push underwater and will carry u faster through the water. remember to try to only breath every couple strokes (accordin to ur age). ur hands should always be movin together. make sure ur head is always facin straight down at the bottom of the pool (unless ur breathin), and remember 2 hand touches! I hope i have helped! Good luck wit the 100 fly, email me ur time (blueacegirl19@yahoo.com)

Your body position should be like a wave, flowing smoothly so there's little water resistance. And like what they said, STAY POSITIVE :)
Happy swimming.

make sure that when you are kicking that you make a big kick and then another smaller kick. for your arms, make sure you reach out as far as possible and then pull back as hard as you can. remember to always pace yourself in any race. good luck!
