That means I would not be using it. It means anyone can 'see' what sites you go to, what you type in your emails, etc. The connection is not encrypted.

It can mean a couple of things. It could mean that the network does not require any password get on, so it's unsecured in that way. It can also mean that there is no encryption key setup on the network, therefore, any communication between your laptop and the wireless router is unsecured. The downside is that it's easily tapped. I would recommend that if you're going to use it, do not do any financial transaction of any kind. Web surfing and chatting should be ok... : )

A wireless network that is considered "unsecured" simply means that anyone who wants to connect and use the network will be able to do so. Unsecured wireless network do not require a password to connect and do not encrypt the the data on the network. Your decision to secure or leave unsecured your wireless network will depend on whether you want to freely share the access to the network or keep people off your network.

If you leave your home open and someone walks in and steals your TV set, that is still theft, it's just not breaking and entering. Stealing bandwidth is still theft. People pay for their internet, and if someone else logs onto their network, it costs them in their time, because those internet pages will load slower with another user doing who knows what on there. On the other side, if people set up a network they should secure it, just most people are ignorant about how tech works and how to do stuff. Even if it says in the manual, those manuals are not always easy to understand. They use too much tech lingo.

means there is no protection eg no WEP keys, eg most routers have the ability to setup WEP keys, eg this is like a password to get onto the internet.
so means your dorm is open access, anybody who has a computer/laptop etc.. and a wifi card can access free of charge.

It's just not encrypted. Depending on the power your router puts out, is how far your siganal would reach.
