If I'm in a warehouse environment, where there are forklifts and stuff moving about, I want to be able to hear them BEFORE they run me down.

MP3 players in a work environment such as a warehouse is really bad. You don't hear any alarms going off, or you can't hear if somebody is shouting you to get away from that falling hammer...You could also be run down by some equipment such as a FLT...Also, if you have an area where hearing protection has to be worn then you can't really comply with it...but then again, if your MP3 player blasts music into your ears much louder than your environment....

One thing to be aware of, is if they damage their hearing through playing the music too loud via their earphones while working the company could be held responsible for allowing it to happen.
If there is a danger of not hearing any vehicle horns or reversing klaxons then In-ear music players are not allowed due to creating an un-safe environment.
There is not a law that i'm aware of for using MP3 players but the HSE could fine the employer using other laws if the use of MP3 players creates a Hazard in itself.

I think it is against safety regulations to listen to any personel music players due to being unable to hear if anyone talking or warning of hazards. If someone was to do this then they would be putting themselves and others at risk from injury.
