When I was younger and at university I thought Philosphy was stupid. However as I've aged I realize that philosophy teaches one how to think critically, to develop a ' world' view and be able analyze information better. Should it be a requirement, probably , but then people don't really start to examine their lives until they have had experiences that jolt the way they view the world.

I think psychology , sociology, philosophy, anthropology should be high school graduation requirements for everyone along with the maths, sciences, language arts and history and georgraphy. Probably should teach life skills too not just for the students in basic skills but for the university bound as well. Maybe we should have five years of high school instead of the four most western industrialized countries have. Give the students more time to grow up and mature .

Personally I think we would all be better off studying Anthropology. Learning about cultural universal and differences can help us to understand allot about what it means to be human, as well as open our minds to the possibilities of very different perspectives.
Philosophy on the other hand is a matter of opinion which usually is either on one side or the other of the religious debate regardless of the question.
Studying history and anthropology and coming to our own conclusions about what the meaning of life is for ourselves is a clearer way to understanding than basing understanding on the opinions of others.
I have studied both anthropology and philosophy and found that I learned so much from anthropology and either agreed with or disagreed with philosophers, but learned little if anything.

There are those serene and blissful people who could care less about philosophy, or understanding how the world works. They simply go on with their lives, making a living and raising sound, moral families without worrying about "The meaning of life" or "Do we really exist." They are to be envied.

Yes.

Philo - Love

Soph - Wisdom

Philosophy is the Love of Wisdom.

Is it not wise to Love Wisdom?

Philosophy is not the Love of "generating quotes," "looking smart," or quoting what is considered conventional Wisdom. Connotations of the word has put the practice of the essence of the word in bad stead. Many of us forget the true meaning of the word.

Love of Wisdom goes a long way. It give one perspective, coping mechanisms, insight, and balance.

Some humans haven't been as blessed in the thinking department as others, so trying to get them to understand philosophy is pretty much useless; however, for those of us who are capable, I think it is very useful.

Assuming you meant philosophy, no. I think it's a waste of time. What possible purpose does philosophy serve other than to 1) generate quotes and 2) look smart?

Philosoph: (from the Greek) to waste time. A Philosopher is therefore one who is a time-waster, a waster of time. And people's patience.

Oh, and just to contradict the answers above, my IQ is higher than yours.

THOREAU once wrote as near as possible dwell near the stream or channel in which your life flows. you must first find out who you really are, that which moves and inspires your soul and mind to strive to dream impossibly, not really, beautiful dreams and then you must be willing to pay the price, dedication, study, hard work, to make those dreams become reality.
