Well I don't know about the world, but in American culture it is very difficult to live in accordance with your own values as opposed to those of the culture.
I don't drive a SUV, or have a cell phone, or any designer clothes, or get my nails done, and while I would love to say I am just so comfortable just being me, I feel very uncomfortable in this culture.
Where I live I have found it almost impossible to find others who are not consumed by the material based, status conscious culture.
Even the supposed counterculture are just as busy fitting in to their group with the right uniforms.
It is hard being an individual and very lonely sometimes.

It is really difficult to get a group of teenagers all together and someone not start a fight or start name calling like a bunch of 6 and 7 yr olds.

What IS really difficult to do in this world is to live in peace and harmony. We find stupid and petty excuses such as ethnic and/or racial differences and religious differences to war and destroy ourselves and our surrounding natural resources in the process. It seems as though our technological and intellectual advancements have made us into stupid and petty thinkers! We've lost our sense of humanity, yet we call ourselves humans and say we're humane?

Maintaining (keeping) your self respect.
When ever you are called on to do something that is not quite right (in your opinion) and you do it, a little piece of that self respect is gone forever. You have sold it. Prostituting goes far beyond sex. People exchange a piece, maybe small and maybe large, of their self respect every day for something they consider valuable, frequently it is a paycheck.
Self respect is like yesterday, when it's gone, it's gone. And just like yesterday, there is simply no way to retrieve it.
