Snakes are not poisonous they are venomous. There is a difference
Most venomous snake: The Hook-nosed seasnake (Enhydrina schistosa) from The Persian Gulf to Southern Asia is considered to be the most venomous. Its venom is estimated to be 100 times more potent than the King Cobra. But few people are killed by it because like most seasnakes, it is shy and gentle and seldom bites, even when handled by people.
After that is the Inland Taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus) from Australia
The snake that kills the most people is the King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) from India eastward to Vietnam, southern China, and the Philippines, and Southeast Asia through Malaysia and Indonesia. It is also considered the longest venomous snake, averaging 3m with the longest verified length at 5.58m. Although its venom may not be as toxic as the hook-nosed seasnake, the King Cobra can inject a larger quantity of venom. Its glands can contain about 6 millilitres of venom, which is enough to kill an Asian elephant.

The inland taipan has the most powerful venom (not poison) of any land snake. However, as another poster stated, there are species of sea snake, which rarely or never leave the water, that have venom many times more powerful than cobra venom. These snakes do tend to be slow to anger, and have small fangs, but you don't want to get too close, because they are extremely lethal and it's a mistake you'll only make once.

I'm not a snake expert but I have heard that some of the venomous sea snakes carry poisons that would put a land snake to shame. As I recall it was stated on a nature documentary. They went on to say the sea snake seldom bites a human so very little is known by the general public about it's potent bite.
A little research could easily dispel or confirm their remarks.
I've also heard of another snake in the South Western US. As you may know, snake venom comes in two varieties. Neuro-toxin attacks the nervous system and hemo-toxin that attacks the blood and other tissues of the body. According to some outdoors men friends, a rattlesnake known to them as a "Mohave green" possesses components of both types. If this isn't some sort of wives's tale, and I trust these guys, this venom would be very dangerous as medical personnel would be forced to try to control two reactions simultaneously.
BTW, the more venom injected the more lethal the bite. I.
E. cobra venom is essentially cobra venom, all variates are about the same strength. The King Cobra is no exception. The difference is the amount of venom he injects when he bites.

The Inland Taipan or Fierce Snake (Oxyuranus microlepidotus). The venom from a single bite is enough to kill 100 adults or 250,000 mice. So 1 person = 2,500 meeces?
They're found in the desert areas of central Australia, hunt small rodents, and are generally shy critters.
There are no fatalities listed for people who encountered them accidentally (but then how many people tromp around that part of Australia?). At least one person died trying to capture the snake, who did not appreciate his interest in science.
So this beasty is the most poisonous, but it's not the deadliest, in terms of annual human fatalities. That's ANOTHER question! :)

The Inland Taipan has the most toxic poison. WAAAYYY more deaths are accredited to the Puff Adder and Gabboon each year though.
