The policy of extending a nation's authority by territorial acquisition or by the establishment of economic and political hegemony over other nations. (imperialism)
A policy by which a nation maintains or extends its control over foreign dependencies. (colonialism)
they are very similar.....

imperialism is when a country controls another country, colonialism is when the people of a country move into another country, control it, change it's culture, etc.

An imperial nation doesnt have to colonize.
