OMG! No it is not difficult, in fact, it's amazingly interesting. The first hieroglyphs I learned were for the Pharaoh Ramses.
There are some really good sites online. Champollion is the guy that figured it out, and if you come across his book anywhere, borrow it, buy it, steal it (and bring it back). It is so awesome. Most of the Hieroglyphs are drawn in color and offer explanations to their origins. It is a fascinating subject and I highly recommend anyone to look into it.

Pick up some books on Egyptology. Hieroglyphs are actually pretty easy to read--thing is they are all written in Egyptian, so once you translate the glyphs, you then have to translate from Kemetic to English.

There are actually books available for learning hieroglyphics thanks to a brilliant British scholar who wrote a codex some years ago. Check google and see what comes up.
