custody determines who is responsible for the child ie what education the child will receive, who the family doctor is, even hair colour and types of sports the child will be in.

there are 2 types of custody

1) sole - one parent is the decision maker. this type of custody is generally awarded in cases where one parent is so irresponsible that s/he is not capable of caring properly for a child, and in cases where the parents cannot communicate - such as cases where one parent has been abusive to the other.

2) shared/joint custody - both parents jointly make decisions regarding the child's care. this type of custody is generally decided out of court when the parties can get along reasonably well. most cases which end up in court end up with one parent getting sole custody.

visitation determines how often the parent who does not live with the child gets to see the child

You need to talk to a lawyer, and get a answer or look on the internet of what the laws are in your state.
I believe that sole custody is where you have custody and the other person has given up their rights to the children in all aspects.
I think that full custody is where the other person still has to pay child support.
But I am not complety sure of the difference between the two is .
good luck

you have primary physical custody (which is sole) this is where the child lives with one parent and the other has visitation and you have joint custody where the parents split the time with the child and they have two homes. Joiont custody can work if the parents are in the same town and the child is old enough to understand what is going on. You also have what is referrred to as joint legal custody and this has nothing to do with the living arrangements but is what allows both parents to have a say in all medical and educational choices for the child. I have primary physical custody and joint legal custody of all three of my kids, my husband has joint physical and legal custody of his. Hope this helps.

Sole custody is when you and only you are making what is known as "life decisions" for your child / children.

Full custody means you are the parent of residence but you may confer with the other parent on such decision making.

Whatever you do remember the kid/s have nothing to do with the divorce. Do not take away the other parents privaledges unless that parent is truly dangerous to the child.

I am divorced, my 4 kids live with their mom and we ALL get along great. I love my children and they love both parents equally. This is because my ex- and I continue in a mature relationship even though we both now have significant others in our lives.
