I am not a professional or anything but I work at a used furniture store and we get appliances all the time.
In the back of your freezer, there is a little drain hole for water to drain from when it goes through defrost. You won't be able to see this holw unless you unscrew the tray from the freezer. This will reveil all of your coils and this hole. Is there ice build up in the back on the bottom???
If this is the case the ice is blocking the hole and water is not draining which is causing the freezer to not get cold enough. (don't ask me why...it just does) Anyway if it is frozen, you need to unfreeze it by taking a blowdryer or something else that blows hot air and defrost it yourself.
You will know when it is defrosted because if you look at the bottom back of your fridge there should be a little spout that comes out into a drain pain. Pour some water down that hole and water should come out into the pan.
I am not sure why this happens, but it happened to our fridge at home and since I have done this, everything has been working wonderfully for months now.
I hope I haven't confused you. Good Luck!

Most compressors carry a 5 year warrenty. Parts only. Even with compressor warrenty it's going to cost more than $180.00 to repair. I know it sounds stupid but make sure the light is is going out when the door is closed. A light staying on 24-7 adds an awful lot of heat and cause a problem just like your's. It's a pretty commom problem.

Put a piece of paper on the edge of the frig and close the door. IF you can pull it out easily with the door, your gasket might need to be replaced.
$180 seems like a lot to check the frig. Try another service. I would call Whirlpool National and ask them what to do.
Compared repairing to a new one. But new frigs have better energy savings. Our frig is about five/six years old and we dont have the problem.

There is a vacuum ventilation fan located in front of the compressor in ad mist of the cooling coils if this is stuck or froze it will cause freezer not to drop to zero. Reverse suck-ion on vacuum cleaner and force blow little fan. Soak good with WD-40

I cant help with fixing it but if all else fails try looking at your local Freecycle pages. I just saw 2 friges put up on my local site and of course they were taken asap. Look several times a day and respond quickly is the best advice I can give. You can find your local Freecycle through yahoo groups. If there isnt one in your area you might want to consider starting one.
Last thought......unplug the thing and leave it unplugged for several hours. Then reset the controls before plugging it in. It could be confused. It happens.....

I know this is going to really sound weird but I had the same problem, I had the repaiman come out and he found a mouse had gotten into the fan and stopped it. I paid out a large chunk of money for this guy to come out and remove a dead mouse from my fridge. There are two fans, one in back and one inside the freezer. check them both.

you have thermostat settings? if your putting the setting where the operating manual suggests and your not getting a sufficient temperature, the stat is not allowing the compressor to stay on long enough to cool.
a service call is in order.

Sorry, I would charge more than $180 to go out and help you. I suspect it is the compressor. It's the weak link in the entire system.
