Why did a large proportion of US citizens support the IRA's terrorism against Britain, I know since 9/11 thinks have changed but you have allot to answer for. The IRA/ Sinn Fein not only want a free Ireland, but they want a communist one, far left at least, sort of goes against everything I thought you stood for?
It really was a bitter pill for us to swallow that the USA funded and harboured these terrorists when they were blowing up innocent civilians. In fact you still harbour some, refusing to hand them over for trial in the UK.

I went to a fundraiser in NY where Adams was the featured speaker... suffice it to say the descriptions of the situation given at that were a far cry from the reality.

People here, I think, only saw and heard it in terms of religious persecution, and since there is a huge Irish Catholic population in the US, the money was donated, right or wrong.

In defense of my countrymen, when I travel in Europe people there are pretty much clueless as to the reality of living in the United States, yet they all feel free to tell me what we're doing wrong when they don't know what they're talking about. Human nature to criticize others instead of putting their own house in order.

Perhaps you are unaware of the abuses and atrocities against the Irish Catholic people by the Protestant English monarchy and Parliament, and by Protestant "Orangemen" and the "Red Hand" of Northern Ireland. Being "handed over for trial" in the UK was tantamount to a death sentence by a kangaroo court. Do you recall "and they're hanging men and women for the wearing of the green"? A good historical novel on this subject is "Redemption" by Leon Uris.

Modern terrorism in Ireland has largely been a product of the radical anti-Catholic "Ulster Freedom Fighters" of Northern Ireland, not the IRA, but the IRA doesn't control the media.

That wasn't me..... Shaun and Patrick were the ones who supported the Irish Rep Army.... and they were both Irish lads. And, those pesky Leprechauns were a bit of a problem also, lots of gold.... in pots don't you know.... rainbows and all that.

I would say that 99+++% of Americans were against the IRA of Ireland and N Ireland.

The only IRA I supported was my Individual Retirement Account...... me thinks maybe you have those IRAs confused..... where Americans are concerned.

Yes, it is hypocritical that elements of the US government----definitely not the elected government, but the sneakier elements----strongly supported the world's most sophisticated terrorist movement. Remember NORAID? Then again, once they got a number of Hollywood stars on board the Irish bandwagon, the gullible public (if they see it on tv it's gotta be true!!) just went along with it blindly. At least they've stopped funding them finally.

A "large population"?????

It was a very small number of Americans who supported the IRA. The fact is though that we live in a free country and there were no laws on our books that would allow us to stop their actions (most of which was financial). Once the Patriot Act was signed ( an anti-terrorism bill) laws were established to enable the government to collect the evidence and information needed to bring these "supporters" to justice.

Why is it that most Brits hate Bush even though he got these laws passed thus ending the terror of the IRA?

I don't support the IRA, but they were fighting for their rights because England another control freak country was always stepping in and telling Ireland what they could do and not do !
