I'm not a doc. I have the same problem and here is what I know about myself.
I don't take any drugs to keep mine down and I don't know if he does either but this is good either way.
For many people, it is the empty calories that get you. Controlling your fat intake is key, but people think that you can eat and drink all of the low or no fat things you want because fat is the problem. Truth is that empty calories (orange juice, alcohol, candy, whatever) gets transformed into fat in the end and you are right back where you started. The Key for me is eat and drink what you want in moderation and exercise for a half an hour 4-5 days a week (brisk walking or running, etc.). Stay away from Red meat if you have to cut something out. That is the way to keep it in check. Tell him he can drink some alcohol per day (1 beer, 1 glass of wine) if he is willing to exercise too. Keep seeing the doctor to check on his progress.
Good Luck. It ain't easy at first.

People in AA will be quick to answer this question with words of encouragement, prayers, and the statement that he has a problem. I think the operative question here is how much is to much? You did not indicate how much he drinks or for how long this has been going on. Some people can have a drink a day and over indulge once in awhile and everything is fine for them. In my youth I drank 5 or 6 per day for a year or so and then slowly adjusted to a more reasonable consumption pattern. If your boyfriend is drinking more than three per day in a short period of time on a consistent basis then you may have an issue to deal with. However the most important measure of an alcoholic is, does his drinking interfere with his work or social life. Is there a history of alcoholism in his family. It is a genetic disease. Liver disease takes a long time to set in so if he is under the age of 30 I think this is not really a possibility. The other symptoms you are describing sound like they need professional attention. A bloody stool is nothing to take lightly.

I am not sure about alcohol's contribution to the rise of cholesterol i would suggest you consult your doctor or better yet just pop into the pharmacy and ask your pharmacists they are usually a wealth of information.
On another tip I would say you need to worry about more than his cholesterol if he is drinking alcohol everyday.

I do not believe that alcohol and Cholesterol are related, as Cholesterol is a fat. Alcohol has no fat. If he snacks on stuff like chips, and other fatty things, you may draw an indirect relationship there.
