It depends on what you consider "heavy metal." Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath are probably the most well-known forerunners of HM, but other bands may have surpassed them in *current* popularity.
(P.S. - I think I've done my part to try to make Judas Priest the most well-known metal band on "Answers." LMAO! Just check the "favorite band"/"favorite song" questions.)
