You can't actually get pregnant at any time - you can only get pregnant when an egg has been released and is present in the fallopian tubes. This is normally about 11 - 16 days into your cycle (11 - 16 days after your last period started), depending on how long your cycles are (women with shorter cycles tend to ovulate earlier).

After the egg has been released, not been fertilised and been absorbed by the body it is GONE and pregnancy is not possible until the next cycle.

The reason why people say you can get pregnant at any time is that unless you monitor your cycle (taking temperatures etc) you cannot be sure exactly when you are ovulating, it might be possible to ovulate very early or very late in your cycle, especially if your cycle has been a bit upset with stress, illness etc. Also sperm can live in the woman's body for up to about 5 days (if she produces good quality cervical fluid) so you could have sex on day 11 of your cycle, ovulate on day 16 and still get pregnant as the sperm has hung around for five days!!!

If you want to either achieve or prevent pregnancy you need really to try and monitor your cycle - this will give you a better idea of "safe" times to have sex and the best times to conceive. I'd recommend you get hold of "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Wechsler, which is the Bible of Fertility Awareness. It makes it a lot easier to understand how your body works.

That really depends on when YOU ovulate. Not all women ovulate at the perfect mid-cycle example shown on charts. When you are ovulating is the ONLY time you can become pregnant (although sperm that is still in the body from up to 3 days before ovulation is still mobile enough to fertilize any egg it comes into contact with). Since you are trying to conceive, it would be very helpful for you to try to trace when you're ovulating. You can do this by buying an ovulation test at a pharmacy (they're found by the pregnancy tests and are generally anywhere from $15-40). There are also some physical signs of ovulation such as a slightly raised temperature and thicker, mucousy vaginal discharge.
Your doctor will be able to help you track your ovulation cycle as well, and if you're trying to conceive it could be worth all the while to pay him a visit.

Any time you have unprotected sex, you can get pregnant. It is not very likely that you would get pregnant one day before your period is due....but I've worked in the ob/gyn field for 12 years and I've learned that anything is possible. Not all women have periods like they describe them in textbooks. If you don't get your period in a couple of weeks then I would go to my doctor and ask for a Beta Quantitative Analysis blood test. It will tell you definitvely if you are pregnant and approximately how far along you are.

It's possible to become pregnant in any part of your menstrual cycle even the day before your period but the 14th day before your period is the day when you are most fertile (during ovulation) But it is possible to get pregnant at any time if you have unprotected sex
