first of all , firewalls are not the best solution for infected machines ,
Actually what they does is prevention , remediation can be done with any of the Antivirus suits , live NAV ...
i would sugest sonic , or go for winroute firewall , where you could make out your own policy for the incoming and outgoing packets , ports ,would be the finest solution for the firewall
if you use a XP machine , the best thing i would sugest is the ICF , and disable all the service , do enable it only if you need it .
if you use Norton suite , it has the internet security which has policy setup to block spammers
to keep your computer safe, dont go to untrusty sites where they pops up many adds and stuff like that
use the microsoft spam porection suite , or spybot ..
if you are sure that you have a virus in your computer and if you dont have an antiviral kit installled, i would sugest you dont do it, take out your hdd , put as slave n one of your frnds pc where there is an updated version of av, scan it thorough , get the virus removed , get it installed with the latest antiviral pack ,
other thing you have to keep in mind is , to update your windows regularly ...

Clean your computer, online, free, with Trend Micro: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
The best protection is not to open attachments or websites when you're not sure of the contents.
Zone Alarm is a great free firewall: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp
I have used Norton Anti-Virus but it is expensive and nearly impossible to remove, if you want to switch to a free anti-virus.
My husband uses Avast, which is free: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
When I get a new computer, I will start using Avast. Hopefully it will remain free for non-commercial users.

A firewall will not necessarily protect you from a virus. You need anti-virus protection software for this. Try these,
Free Anti-virus:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp
Firewalls are good for stopping someone from connecting to your
system without your permission. Here are a few suggestions,
Free Firewall:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=zaskulist_trial
http://www.comodogroup.com/products/personalfirewall.html
Window XP SP2 Firewall
Another issue for protection for systems connected to the Internet is spyware protection. Try these,
Free Spyware protection:

http://www.safer-networking.org/
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
Download Windows Defender at http://www.microsoft.com
Have fun but be safe.

A firewall is your primary protection, but not foolproof. Since downloading AVG Free I've had no problems.

For a free firewall go with ZoneAlarm.
But, also make sure you are running some antivirus software (Norton, PC-cillin, Panda)!

hi, perhaps you can try Norton to remove the virus. but you need to pay for the software.
i also recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can disable all virus to run, because the virus can only run on IE.
besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.
firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.
download firefox for free:

Firewalls do not protect you from getting viruses installed on your computer. It is used to prevent unauthorized internet users from getting into your network.
Spyware programs are the almost the same as well but they only detect and destroy malicious adware on your computer. It does not stop viruses and worms from getting into your computer.
Most viruses are caused from downloading free programs or software off the internet, installing programs that have no Megabytes off of P2P (Peer to Peer) file sharing programs such as Morpheus or Limewire, and paying attention to those adwares that tell you to download this software.
Although you can get software online for free, some of it is free trials while others are annoying.
If you are using those free scanners from those various security software vendors listed above, they won't allow you to remove viruses because they do not have access to remove those viruses from your computer. They can only detect them.
I would recommend that you buy Norton Internet Security from Circuit City near you to be on the safe side. This software detects and blocks spyware, viruses, and adware. It automatically blocks intruders and identity thieves. It filters spam and dangerous phishing email. It gives you control over all incoming and outgoing Internet traffic. Also, it automatically scans email and instant-message attachments and removes viruses, Trojan horses, and worms. This all-in-one software includes Norton AntiVirus™, Norton™ Personal Firewall, Norton Privacy Control, Norton AntiSpam, and Norton Parental Control. It will only cost you about $60.00 plus tax whereas buying a single package of Norton AntiVirus will cost you about $30.00 plus tax. Unlike McAfee's AntiVirus and Firewall software, it can be annoying getting those popups. Norton only puts a pop-up on your screen telling you that it has deleted the software. It can also tell you that it could not delete the software. Therefore, you would have to go in and do a system scan. Then it can quarantine (delete) those threats and viruses. Although, Norton may not always delete those quarantine items, it is best to run another scan and it will do it successfully the next time. However, if you do decide to buy McAfee I would not guarantee that it won't give you the same problems.
If you thinking about listening to that answerer above who was saying that you can install those programs off those warez sites. Do NOT listen to the answerer above who told you to install those programs of warez site because they have already been cracked and those can be harmful too. There are only a few who give you the true deal like download.com. However, download.com has free-trial software too. It won't tell you that sometimes.
Another recommendation, I would have made to you is to go in and find software that you think you did not install on your computer. Microsoft offers a Malicious Software Removal Tool to checks your computer for infection by specific, prevalent malicious software (including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom) and helps to remove the infection if it is found. I have posted a link in the source area.
However, if you are looking only for a free firewall like I said before, "Firewalls do not protect you from getting viruses installed on your computer. It is used to prevent unauthorized internet users from getting into your network." I would recommend getting Zone Alarm (posted a link below to get a free non-trial version) or using Windows XP2 Firewall. If you brought your computer in 2004,2005, or 2006, it should have a version on your backup CD that you brought with the computer. It is best to run it again in your CD drive and install the firewall.
