Oh yes, it's just that the PD assigned has the physical substance equivalent to the actions of the crime you allegedly committed. Fortunately, it's difficult to make citizens disappear here. If the thought police can't make a real case, eventually you are released.

Ironic and frightening that so many American's confuse the powers granted to the Fed under the (un)Patriot Act with regular law and due process.

In the USA, if you are arrested, and can't afford a lawer on your own, you can alwas get a public defender.... if they try to tell you that your not allowed one, that is very against the law, reguardless of what you've done...
