if your MP3 player is not an iPod, then use Windows Media Player 9 or higher, and go to the upper right hand corner where you can select various music stores. It might require the installation of some small software packages to make each store work on your computer, but you can eventually purchase music from MSN Music, Urge, Napster, Musicmatch, Wal-Mart, and several others.
The benefit of having something other than an iPod: selection.
Note: if you do not have an iPod, you cannot use iTunes. If you have an iPod, you can only use iTunes.
