Childrens Book?

I am trying to find a certin childrens book that I read when I was a child (mi 80-90s) its about a boy that plays hookie from school and goes into the forbidden woods where his farther tells him there are monsters and he goes in there and finds a cave and hides under a bed only to find out that a boy monster lives there. (I think it was done in water colors)

This book sounds familiar to me, too. Sounds like something Maurice Sendak may have written, but I don't recall the title.

A couple of books come to mind, sounds like it could be a Mercer Meyer Book or possibly a book called there is a Monster Under My Bed by James Howe
